Lace is a delicate and ornamental fabric with an open pattern.
It comes in a number of forms but our Society's focus is that of the Lacemakers of Calais - machine-made lace.
Early handmade bobbin lace and needle lace produced a gossamer-like fabric with extraordinary designs applied to a net background.
As this lace fabric became popular in fashions, the search was on to create it on machines.
Machines meant more fabric at a lower cost in less time.
